Reflection Week 3

In today's lesson (2nd March 2013), we have learnt how to create a blog using Blogger, which is the most popular blogging service used today. This is very exciting experience because I have zero knowledge of blogging.

What is a blog?
A blog is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first). Many blogs provide commentary on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries; others function more as online brand advertising of a particular individual or company. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important contribution to the popularity of many blogs.

The advantages blog

There are many advantages to blogging. It gives you a unique way to keep in touch with friends and family. Instead of making phone calls, sending out several emails and working around schedules, you can post a "blog" about what it is you are currently up. Family and friends then have an opportunity at a convenient time for them to read your blog.
Another advantage to blogging is that a lot of blogs are free to set up. Web blogs are easy to set up and don't require you to have extensive computer knowledge to get started. You have the ability to add pictures and backgrounds, many different options to make your blog site personal to you.
Blogging can be a way to promote things you are working on. For example, if you are a writer, you are able to practice your writing skills and showcase your work. You can receive feedback from people that visit your blog and get an idea of how your writing work is coming along.
Blogging can also be a great way to find other people with similar interests as you. By reading and responding to comments left by others, you can get thoughts and ideas about how your work is coming along. If you are writing a personal blog, you can get advice and help if you are looking for it. It can also be a great way to release pent up feelings and help you see things from a different prospective and get different opinions.

The disadvantages of blog
Some of the disadvantages can be that maintaining a blog can be a lot of work and very time consuming. You have to constantly update and add new material in order to keep the flow of traffic to your blog and keep your current readers interested.
You also open yourself up to exposure and criticism. The words you write are there for the entire world to read. It's easy to go off on a rant about the horrible day you had and say things that could later come back to haunt you. Try to keep in mind, that you should always take care in what you blog about. You never know who may be reading your blog. Always take care to limit private details to avoid loss or privacy and security issues.

Justification
Based on the advantages and disadvantages, we should used blog as medium to share knowledge and information and can also create a community of practice. With all the free sites to sign up for a blog, getting started is easy. Once you start, you can better decide if you have the time and ability to keep it up and running.
